weaving water

Weaving Water is a collaborative artwork with Lisa Volta and Stephane Rowley, funded by the Fairmount Park Conservancy. The imagery in our work contains photographs of natural water sources in Philadelphia parks and drawings of plants native to our region.

Weaving Water was composed of two fifteen-foot woven panels that hung on the front porch of Hatfield House, a historic building in the process of renovation in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia. Part of creating the site-specific artwork was integrating ideas about conserving natural spaces with ideas of preserving and restoring historic urban areas that were not always welcoming to the communities they were in. Weaving Water hung at Hatfield House from October 2022 through January 2023.

Stephane Rowley focuses on reusing discarded materials. Sourcing her materials second-hand, from fabric to thread, her woven and stitched work communicates sustainability, growth, evolution, and function ideas.

Lisa Volta has a background in plant medicine and is interested in the intersection of art and science. Her photographs, drawings, and paintings focus on growth, decay, and transformation processes in natural and built spaces.

weaving water: mended

Weaving Water: Mended is an extension of purposes to conserve, engage, preserve, and restore literally and metaphorically. Weathered from three months outdoors, the original piece was removed from the site, dismantled, cleaned, and reconstructed into two new works for Shift, a woman-owned, eco-conscious business in Narberth, PA. We left evidence of the former artwork’s life outdoors while reconfiguring size and structure to suit an indoor space.
